Q. How do I encode or convert my movie to Windows Media Format (WMV)?
  1. Install Windows Media encoder after downloading it from http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=5691ba02-e496-465a-bba9-b2f1182cdf24
  2. Download this Windows Media Encoding configuration file. Right click on the link http://www.motionflicks.com/resources/sample.wme and select "Save Target as ...". Internet Explorer changes the name to sample.mp3. Please rename it to "sample.wme".
  3. Open (Double click) the configuration file (sample.wme) using Windows Media Encoder. You will get 2 error dialog boxes for missing source file. Click Ok to these
  4. Click on the "Properties" button
  5. Click on the "Sources" tab. Click on the "Browse" button to select the right file. Select the correct source file(AVI, VOB, mpeg etc.) you want encoded (i.e., converted)
    • Note:- If you get "file format note recognised" error in next steps, your system does not have some of the decoders for the source file. See the next answer
  6. Click on the "Output" tab. Change the destination filename to the filename and path you want the encoded file to be saved
  7. Click on the "Video Size" tab. Select "(No cropping)" in the "Method" drop down menu
  8. Click on "start encoding". This step will take around 5 minutes per minute of the video
  9. After encoding is done, go to http://www.motionflicks.com/desi/upload.php
  10. Provide title, description and other details
  11. Provide the wmv file just created along with a banner image. Click Upload

  2. Use this to convert the source file into AVI format. Keep the settings to the best possible source quality
  3. Use the resulting AVI file and follow the steps in the previous question

Q. How do I capture a screen shot from the movie to create a thumbnail image (.jpg)?
  1. Open Windows Movie Maker (Start --> All Programs --> Accessories --> Windows Moive Maker)
  2. Open the WMV file you have created
  3. Play the clip and skip to the portion where you want to capture the still shot from
  4. Click on Tools --> Take Picture from Preview. Save the resulting banner file as a jpg file

Q. Why are fast forward and seek in the video not working?
  1. Go to Start --> Programs --> Windows Media --> Utilities --> Windows Media File Editor (You should have installed the Windows Media Encoder - see the first question)
  2. File --> Open. Open the WMV file
  3. File --> Save and Index. Everything should take less than a minute

Q. Why are you using WMV?
We debated a lot on the format. Balancing cost versus quality of the video, we came to the WMV decision. Let us know, if you see any difference in quality.

Q. Why don't you encode(convert) the source at the MotionFlicks servers?
To create best quality video, we believe professionals should have control over encoding. Also, this reduces the upload time and you control the final output.

Q. How come a video is worth a million words?
:-) We all know that pictures are worth a thousand words. We also know that videos are more than thousand pictures, keeping in mind the number of frames per second along with more vivid motions and sound. Hence, our conservative estimate is that a video is worth a million words.
